How about an online training in a classroom?

One of the very first questions my clients often ask me is: How do I train manual workers with no experience of an e-learning environment or with no computer? I tell them: How about an online training in a classroom environment with a facilitator?

We all have an idea of the benefits of online training versus in class training. Just to name a few:
•    The just-in-time access
•    The reduced travelling costs
•    The increased of  consistency
•    The general overall reduced cost per participant, etc.

So why would someone want to ruin such benefits to go in class!?
Throughout my career, I have seen companies going nearly 100% online, others going only online in class while others are going both ways.  A hybrid solution might be the key answer for some particular situation and workers.

With an e-learning course in a classroom, you get the most of these two approaches.  Keep in mind the working environment sometimes just does not have computers or its access is limited!
•    Allows distributing and explaining other documents such as: Policy Information Security and, rules for use of email;
•    You can introduce the course, the importance of information security for the company and sell the course benefits;
•    Explains the use of the mouse and the environment;
•    Answer questions;
•    But more importantly, reassures the participant. Some of them have not followed a course in years!

Should you want to go with a hybrid solution: Do it the right way!
1.    Select a good facilitator, courteous and understanding
2.    The facilitator needs to understand its clienteles’ needs for information and to be reassured prior to the course.
3.    Prepare a short course introduction. Make sure to explain the rules: tell the time allocated, the passing grade note, what to do if they have a question (raise their hands), etc.
4.    Have a comfortable and quiet room with sufficient resources: Table, computers, chairs
5.    Do not allow coffee, water, or food during the training session

Remember that all organizations face different training challenges. The solutions exist. Think about it. Such hybrid solution can be a great help.
